This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government. A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life. "Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized. The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics. Details of the New Electoral Agreement According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed. Wider Political Consultations Taking Place In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising. After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
