European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
